The novel’s plot is mainly set in 1942. Časlav – Čavo Čavić, a mature and experienced man, and Rale Railić, a young, beardless man, are heroes “in their own way,” each driven by their own resolve as they fight “their battles” for the common good. Their primary struggle is for survival, battling hunger and scarcity, while also facing the enemy—especially the Croatian Ustashas. The author incorporates the local dialect and expressions from the region where the heroes come from, adding authenticity to the story. Karan explores the deep inner loneliness of Rale Railić following Čavić’s death. Though the novel lacks a traditional plot structure, it makes up for it with rich psychological analysis of its main characters. The novel was published in 2018.
